Dear Programme Director,

Jim gave me an opportunity to participate in a dramatic way for your recent drive to raise funds in all the time slots. We also discussed some ideas about what people like and might tune in for. After sleeping on the ideas for a few days, I remembered an old successful idea based on "MY MUSIC," a BBC radio show, and "NAME THAT TUNE," and American TV show, and "NAME THE COMPOSER," a monthly show done by Karl Haas, as I'm sure you recall. Each of those three shows required attentive audience participation and you already have a very special audience that migh go for it.

About 25 years ago, a friend of mine challenged my ability to name a composer/composition from the first note or chord and even the orchestra conductor and virtuoso classical music artist from the first few bars. For example, most people can recognize Beethoven's 5th Symphony or JSBach's Contata and Fugue, almost from the first chord. My friend had a recording of the opening few bars and movements of 100 famous classics and I could name 96 almost immediatedly and another 3, soon after, while one I couldn't recognize. Granted these were the 100 most famous compositions and composers, conductors and orchestras, virtuosos and their famous instruments. Even I was surprised but when I thought about it, these were my favourite treats for my ears and brain.

For the WNED-FM announcers, this exercise would be a piece of cake. For most members of the audience, it would be fun to have the announcers show their stuff, or some of the audience to participate, say as the first or second caller to a show. During fund raising, you could perhaps offer a CD or a contribution in his name. There are many game players amongst us, even gamblers. Some audience members might be willing to "bet" on their guess, the wagers gong into the coffers for memberships. A minimum bet might be the minimum cost for a WNED championship.

There may be some legal obstruction to such a concept about which I know not... or not. I thought it might be worthwhile discussing. I know I can get sucked into things if there's a game afoot...I'm guessing there are a lot of folks just like me who love a good challenge and are willing to pay a few bucks to see it through.. I do in many areas and classical music could be my latest...

In any event, let me say that I was spoiled by living in Chicao and having WFMT to which to listen for almost 30 years. In Welland since 1992, WNED was a wonderful surprise and continues to be a surprise year by year. Thank you for perpetuating the listening to very good music 24/7 and the ability to hire very informative announcers. I do miss Elaine and Scot. Elaine especially dazzled me with her attention to the detail of other languages and Scott could get even the grouchiest hibernating bear to stay awake and wait for the coffee to kick in...

Sincerely,

Izzy.
